Revealing Raleigh’s Most Dangerous Intersections

Latest News

A woman recently died after a tragic fatal car accident near a five-lane intersection in Raleigh that’s known for bad crashes.

The collision happened around 7 p.m. on a Friday in August 2021 and involved two cars — an SUV and a minivan.

Police say the SUV was heading east on West Millbrook Road when it collided with the minivan, which was entering the intersection from Town and Country Road. WRAL reports one female victim died in the wreck, and another person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

As car accident lawyers in Raleigh, we understand how difficult this crossing can be. At just 7 miles down the road from our office on Creedmoor Road, we use it often. We know first-hand the risks motorists face every day when going through this and other potentially dangerous crossings.

Dangerous design?

The Y-shaped intersection at West Millbrook and Town and Country roads has seen its share of serious accidents. In May, for example, there was another fatal crash at the intersection. A Raleigh man accused of speeding and crossing the center line died when he hit another motorist in a head-on collision.

One of the major factors that makes this intersection so risky, neighbors say, is how drivers have to come out of Town and Country Road to get onto West Millbrook. Drivers often underestimate how long it will take them to cross here, which means they are pulling out in front of vehicles before it’s safe to do so. The intersection features four lanes of traffic separated by a center lane for left or right turns and a decent-sized buffer between the stop line on Town and Country and West Millbrook. The posted speed limit is 45 mph.

Intersections are one of the most frequent locations of deadly car accidents in the U.S., as they provide multiple opportunities for wrecks like:

  • Head-on collisions
  • T-bones accidents (side-impact crashes)
  • Right-angle hits
  • Rear-End Accidents

Hazardous intersections in Raleigh

West Millbrook at Town and Country isn’t the only risky intersection in Raleigh. A crowd-sourced map of crossroads known for being difficult to navigate pinpoints more than a dozen intersections across the city.

In and around downtown, some of the most dangerous intersections are:

  • Western Boulevard at South Boylan Avenue
  • South Dawson Street at West South Street
  • South Wilmington Street at East Davis Street

Elsewhere in the city, dangerous intersections exist near the on-ramps and off-ramps for US-1 (the Cliff Benson Beltline) and I-40.
