A woman recently died after a tragic fatal car accident near a five-lane intersection in Raleigh that’s known for bad crashes.
The collision happened around 7 p.m. on a Friday in August 2021 and involved two cars — an SUV and a minivan.
Police say the SUV was heading east on West Millbrook Road when it collided with the minivan, which was entering the intersection from Town and Country Road. WRAL reports one female victim died in the wreck, and another person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Dangerous design?
The Y-shaped intersection at West Millbrook and Town and Country roads has seen its share of serious accidents. In May, for example, there was another fatal crash at the intersection. A Raleigh man accused of speeding and crossing the center line died when he hit another motorist in a head-on collision.
One of the major factors that makes this intersection so risky, neighbors say, is how drivers have to come out of Town and Country Road to get onto West Millbrook. Drivers often underestimate how long it will take them to cross here, which means they are pulling out in front of vehicles before it’s safe to do so. The intersection features four lanes of traffic separated by a center lane for left or right turns and a decent-sized buffer between the stop line on Town and Country and West Millbrook. The posted speed limit is 45 mph.

The number of fatal intersection crashes in North Carolina has held steady over the last five years. Federal data points to an average of about 255 fatal crossroad accidents per year. In the areas of the Sandhills and Triangle, the county reporting the most deadly intersection crashes is Wake County. There were 20 such accidents in 2019, which represents the most recent information available.
However, the county with the highest rate of intersection crashes per 100,000 people is Nash County, which has a deadly intersection crash rate of 8.5. (Wake County’s rate is 1.8.)
Elsewhere: Cumberland County’s fatal intersection accident rate is 4.5. In Durham County, it’s 2.2.
