Creditors Many Only Contact Debtors Under Federal Law

Federal law provides that bill collectors may only contact the individual who owes the debt. If a creditor contacts the debtor's employer, spouse, family members, or friends regarding the collection of an outstanding balance, the creditor is in violation of The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
