Federal regulations may be changing once again for some truck drivers. Just after truck driver regulations changed in 2013, now drivers may need to satisfy speed requirements by the end of 2014.
The Department of Transportation has issued a possible mandate to add speed limiters to certain trucks. There is no definite maximum speed yet, but news reports cite rumors of 68MPH.
What trucks would need to satisfy the proposed requirement?
- Trucks weighing 26,000 lbs or more
- Trucks traveling on roads with speeds of 55MPH+
The reason behind the speed limiter? Officials estimate the use of speed limiters could prevent over 1,100 fatal crashes annually.
Curious if these regulation changes will be approved? Approval/disapproval is scheduled for May 21. If passed it will be forwarded to the White Houses’ Office of Management and Budget June 26.
