Former North Carolina State Basketball Player Dies In Bus Accident

A former North Carolina State University basketball standout was killed in a bus accident in Raleigh this week.
According to Raleigh police, 47-year-old Lorenzo Emile Charles was driving a charter bus westbound on Interstate 40 when he lost control of the vehicle on an exit ramp and left the roadway. The bus, which was not carrying any passengers, crashed into a stand of trees, killing the driver.
This charter bus accident was one of a string of serious commercial bus accidents around the country in the last two months. While many of the charter bus accidents in the near pass have been blamed on federal regulation violations and poorly-run companies, the bus company in this case, Elite Tours, has a solid safety record that includes only one minor violation. The bus accident is still under investigation and authorities are not yet sure what caused the crash. After the accident, two lanes of I-40 were closed for over an hour.
Charles, a Wake Forest resident, was a member of the NC State Wolfpack in 1983, the year that the team won the NCAA championship title. In the final seconds of the final game, Charles slam-dunked the ball to bring his team the win.
