A woman suffered fatal personal injuries on the morning of October 1 after the car she was driving collided with a utility pole on U.S. 25, Greenville Highway in Flat Rock, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Trooper Jeff Bair said that 34-year-old Hendersonville resident Amie Bagwell Barnes was northbound on Greenville Highway in a 1995 Corvette when she lost control of the vehicle. The car ran off the road to the right, collided with a utility pole, and caught fire. The accident was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Bair noted that Barnes was traveling at an estimated rate of 85 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Barnes died inside the vehicle. A passenger, Florida resident Jorge Lopez, escaped with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
Bair said that alcohol is suspected to have been a factor.
