#1 Spot for Bicycle Accidents in the Triangle: Wake County

raleigh bicycle accidentAlthough the Capital Area Greenway offers more than 100 miles of trails, many cyclists prefer biking on roadways. This is particularly true for those who commute to work by bike in the Raleigh area. With neighboring Cary being named a bicycle-friendly town by the League of American Bicyclists, and Durham having so many students and staff of Duke who live within biking distance to their classes and workplaces - the Triangle has a large population of bicyclists who bike the roads for pleasure and utility.

Even with the most safety-conscious behavior and equipment, accidents happen. Between 2010-2014, hundreds of bicycle crashes occurred in our region, but the majority of them occurred in Wake County. According to the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the numbers of reportable vehicle-bike crashes on public roads include:

Alamance - 41

Wake County - 519

Orange - 96

Lee - 19

Johnston - 45

Harnett - 22

Franklin - 8

Durham - 111

Cumberland - 95

Chatham - 17
