An attorney from Tarboro who suffered fatal personal injuries when his vehicle ran off a bridge and into the Tar River on January 7 was speeding at the time of the crash, according to a statement from the North Carolina Highway Patrol on January 11.
According to the NCHP, 57-year-old Jimmie Keel was estimated to have been driving at a speed of 80 mph in a 65 mph zone on U.S. Highway 64 Bypass when he ran off the road in a curve before the bridge and over-corrected. The Chevrolet Suburban he was driving struck a guardrail and rolled down an embankment and into the river.
According to Sgt. Jeff Gordon of the Highway Patrol, troopers have yet to determine the initial cause of Keel running off the road.
