An 18-year-old was listed in critical condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital on the night of July 7 after suffering personal injuries in an accident in which a car he was riding in ran off the road in Newport.
Daniel Bailey was out with friends at about 4 a.m. on July 3 when the accident took place, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. He is a recent graduate of Havelock High School, where he was considered a star player on the football team.
Bailey received air transport to the hospital after the accident. His family said that he is paralyzed from the waist down.
The NCHP charged the driver, Corey Johnson, with reckless driving. His record contains prior traffic offenses including speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, and failure to obey a traffic officer.
