A suit has been filed against Gateway Regional Medical Center and one of its nurses by Illinois residents Sharon and Charles Daniele, who claim that Sharon Daniele suffered personal injuries after falling when the nurse left her alone in the bathroom.

According to the claim the Danieles filed in Madison County, Illinois Circuit Court on December 23, Sharon Daniele was a patient at Gateway Regional and needed to use the bathroom. Ruth K. Droste, a nurse at the hospital, assisted her to the bathroom then left her alone, according to the suit.

Daniele claims that after using the restroom, she repeatedly called for assistance from Droste to return to her hospital bed. But the complaint says that after receiving no response for a “lengthy period of time,” she attempted to leave the restroom on her own and fell.

The suit says that Daniele was admitted to the hospital on December 26, 2006 to undergo treatment for symptoms of dizziness and vertigo.

Daniele alleges that due to her fall, she suffered severe, painful, and disabling injuries to her left arm and wrist and incurred medical expenses. She also claims to have experienced pain and suffering, loss of normal life, disability, increased risk of future harm, and a loss of wages.

Charles Daniele claims to have suffered a loss of his wife’s society, consortium, companionship, love, affection, and support.

The suit alleges negligence on the part of Droste and Gateway Regional for failure to properly assist Daniele on her return to her bed, failure to properly monitor, attend to, and assist her while she was using the restroom, and failure to have sufficient staff that were properly trained to attend to her. The Danieles seek damages in excess of $300,000 plus costs.
