Most people know strep throat is a common, easily treated infection. But what most people do not know is that strep throat can lead to diseases such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Often kids who suffer from these diseases are labeled as mentally ill or bipolar.
One family, with a daughter named Grace, tried to find answers to her erratic behavior for two years. After Grace had a strep throat infection, she suffered from high fevers every 28 days. After each fever, she would develop a compulsive habit. For example, she would throw a tantrum if her crayons were not organized correctly.
Doctors eventually found that strep throat was the cause of her ailment. This infection causes an abnormal immune reaction and the proteins attack the area of the brain that controls the reaction. This disease is known as PANDAS, which stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep. Research associated with this disease is currently being conducted. Not only can PANDAS cause Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but it can also be linked to tics and paranoia.
The good news is there is a cure for this disease. Since strep throat is the cause, it can be treated with antibiotics. Medication will have to be taken over a long period of time, but kids can return to normal.
