A settlement was recently reached in a wrongful death suit that stemmed from a Staten Island Ferry crash worth $8.7 million.
The suit was filed against New York City by the widow of Jon Healy, who was one of the eleven people killed in the crash that also caused 50 others to sustain personal injuries.
The high speed crash took place because of the ferry failing to come to a stop when reaching the dock. It was discovered that the boat’s pilot was fatigued and on pain medication at the time of the crash. He received 18 months in prison after being charged with and pleading guilty to manslaughter due to negligence.
The settlement was among the largest ever achieved in the state of New York.
