According to a spokeswoman for UNC Hospitals, a woman involved in a head-on collision on June 18 on Gillis Hill Road died of the personal injuries she suffered in the crash on June 20.
According to a preliminary investigation, the woman, 20-year-old Hope Mills resident Dana Royal, may have lost control of her vehicle, left the road, overcorrected, and struck a van head-on.
The occupants of the van, Ardella and Terry Coonfield, were trapped in the burning van after the crash. Officer Mark Jodoin was able to pull Terry Coonfield free from the van and firefighters extracted his mother from the vehicle. However, a relative said that Ardella Coonfield died shortly after the crash.
