Raleigh, NC (March 5, 2026) – A moped driver died on Wednesday, March 4, after a two-vehicle crash on Hammond Road in Raleigh. The accident happened shortly after 2:45 p.m., prompting an emergency response to the scene.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on Hammond Road when it struck the rear of a moped moving in the same direction. The impact caused the rider to be thrown from the vehicle.
Witnesses said the Jeep then ran over the moped operator after the initial collision. Emergency crews arrived and provided immediate medical attention at the scene. Despite their efforts, he died from the injuries suffered in the crash.
Officials identified the victim as Michael Ray Capers. Police said the Jeep driver, identified as 25-year-old Gabriela Perez Ortiz, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officers did not find evidence of impairment during their initial review.
Authorities cited Ortiz for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed, and driving without an operator’s license. The Raleigh Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Michael Capers.
7 Common Causes of Rear-End Crashes in North Carolina
Following too closely is one of the most common causes of rear-end crashes in North Carolina. Drivers who leave little space between vehicles have less time to react. Sudden braking ahead can quickly lead to a crash.
Distracted driving is another frequent cause of rear-end collisions. Looking at a phone, adjusting controls, or reaching for items inside the car can take attention away from the road. Even a short distraction can prevent a driver from noticing slowing traffic.
Sudden traffic slowdowns also contribute to many rear-end crashes. Heavy congestion, traffic signals, and merging vehicles can cause traffic to stop quickly. Drivers who fail to anticipate these changes may strike the vehicle ahead.
Rain and wet road surfaces can make stopping more difficult for drivers. Reduced traction increases braking distance and can cause vehicles to slide forward. These conditions often raise the risk of rear-end accidents across North Carolina roads.
Vehicle maintenance problems can also lead to crashes. Worn brakes, damaged tires, or other mechanical issues can affect how quickly a vehicle stops. Regular inspections help reduce the chance of these failures.
Fatigue may slow a driver’s reaction time. Tired drivers may struggle to focus on traffic conditions ahead. A delayed response can increase the likelihood of hitting another vehicle from behind.
Aggressive driving behavior can also play a role. Drivers who speed, tailgate, or make sudden movements may create dangerous situations. These actions often reduce the space needed to stop safely.
