An Archer Lodge car accident involving two pickup trucks killed a Clayton High School graduate near her parents' home on Saturday.

Shannon Adkins of Clayton was driving a truck north on Buffalo Road when the driver of a truck going south crossed the center line and struck her. Adkins' truck overturned and rolled onto the shoulder of the road. Adkins, who was wearing her seat belt, died at the scene.

Desiree Olsen, the driver of the other vehicle, is listed in fair condition at WakeMed. Alcohol was a factor, according to troopers, and Olsen was charged with driving while impaired.

Ernie Adkins, Shannon Adkins' mother, was awake at the time of the accident and waiting for her daughter to get home. She heard the terrible crash that claimed her daughter's life. She and her husband walked out to the crash scene and learned of their daughter's death from troopers.

Adkins graduated from Clayton High School and was pursuing a career in criminal justice.
