On July 1, the parent of a toddler who died from the personal injuries he sustained from being crushed by an iron gate at the Cabrini-Green rowhouses filed a wrongful death suit in the court of Cook County, Illinois. The suit claims negligence on the part of the project’s management firm because of fault hinges causing the gate to fall on the child.
According to the attorney for Pamela Cooper, the 3-year-old child’s mother, two of the three hinges keeping the gate in place had rusted through.
The suit is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 from Urban Property Advisors, which is the private firm that manages the rowhouses for the Chicago Housing Authority.
The gate that crushed the child on June 27 had failed a building code inspection on June 23, according to the Chicago Department of Buildings.
