On January 4, police said they have charged the mother of a 23-month-old child who suffered personal injuries when the child was struck by a car on December 28.
According to investigators, the mother had left the child unsupervised along with another sibling in a car parked along U.S. Highway 70. The child got out of the vehicle and walked into the roadway and into the path of a car driven by a woman from Burlington, who hit the child.
The child’s mother, 22-year-old Melissa Ann Rios, is faced with one count of contributing to the delinquency/neglect of a minor. The child suffered serious injuries and received air transport to Duke University Medical Center for treatment.
