A teenage girl from Moore County died of the personal injuries she suffered on May 26 when her vehicle ran off the road and went down an embankment.

According to a dispatcher, the North Carolina Highway Patrol out of Monroe received a call shortly before 10:30 a.m. that a car had collided with a tree and became stuck in a creek approximately five miles from Carthage.

The driver, 17-year-old Jennifer Lindsey Benson, was eastbound on Dowd Road when the vehicle apparently went across the center line and ran off the road, hitting a sign. The car then plummeted down an embankment.

Benson, a Pinecrest High School student, died of the injuries she sustained in the crash. No other vehicles were involved. Police believe speed may have been a factor.
