A doctor who was at fault for a crash in which a man suffered fatal personal injuries on his wedding day left court on February 5 with just a traffic ticket.

The accident took place on September 12, 2009 on Westgate Road at Glenwood Avenue toward Interstate 540.

The groom, 28-year-old Christopher Raynor, and his groomsmen were en route to brunch prior to Raynor’s wedding when a car ran a red light on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.

Raynor was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the back seat and struck by a third car on the street. He received transport to Wake Med Hospital, where he later died.

The driver who ran the red light, James Howard Early, a doctor in Asheville, was convicted of only a charge of running a red light and received a $100 fine.

The Raynor family reached an agreement with prosecutors to drop misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charges.

Early pleaded “responsible” through his attorney.
