Obtaining Part D Coverage

In order to have your prescription drugs covered by Medicare, you must have a plan provided by a private insurance company that offers this service known as Part D. There are two ways to obtain Part D coverage; you can purchase the service without having to have a plan attached, or you can buy the service along with a Medicare Advantage Plan, which will provide you with other benefits.

A plan known as a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) will add prescription drug coverage to your Original Medicare plan. Other plans that are provided through Medicare Advantage Plans such as, Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) or Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). These plans will provide prescription drug coverage along with other services. In order to join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must have Part A and B of Original Medicare.

There are only a few steps you need to complete in order to join a drug plan. First, you must enroll on the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov. Then you must complete the paper enrollment form. After that, you must call the plan and call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. Once you join a Part D plan provided by Medicare, you will give the Medicare office the start date/dates of your Part A and/or Part B insurance.
