Harnett County Crash Kills Child

A three-year-old girl was struck by a car near Lillington. The toddler was under the supervision of her grandmother who tried to pull her away from oncoming traffic, but was just a few seconds too late. No charges have been brought against the driver since no contributing factors like speed or substance abuse were involved.

Children Hit by Cars

Children are at a higher risk of being hit by a car because of their size. Small children are lower to the ground and poorly visible to drivers. Children are also not fully aware of the dangers traffic poses. Still developing mentally, children are prone to run out into a street to retrieve a toy without the mental awareness to stop and look both ways.

Driveway Accidents

Although this Harnett County car accident took place along a road notorious to locals for a number of car wrecks, many car accidents that kill or injure children take place in quiet, unassuming driveways. Oftentimes parents or family back out of their driveway and don’t see the child playing behind the car, or the toddler may run out fast before the driver can react.
