ABC 13 reported that a French lion trainer was brutally attacked by a lion during his circus performance.
The incident occurred at Buffalo Circus in Doullens, a city in Northern France.
Steve Loberot, the trainer, experienced serious injuries to his head and throat. He was in surgery for several hours, and he survived the attack.
The attack happened during the middle of the team's regular performance. According to The Holidog Times, the lion and the trainer had been working together for six years. Although the cause of the attack is uncertain, Buffalo Circus believes "mating season" could be the reason for the incident.
After the attack, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) stated in a press release, "This accident proves once again that the use of wild animals for spectacles goes against not only the well-being of the animals but threatens the safety of circus personnel and the public."
According to circus representatives, the lion will perform again once the trainer has healed.
