Erwin Man Killed In Crash On Highway 217

Shortly after 2 a.m. on June 22, an Erwin man died of the personal injuries he suffered in a crash on N.C. 217, according to the Highway Patrol.

Trooper B.O. Johnson said that 37-year-old William Dean McKinney was southbound at a high rate of speed when he ran off the left side of the road while rounding a right-hand curve and struck a highway sign and utility pole.

The vehicle eventually came to rest on private property.

McKinney received transport to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital, but Johnson did not know if he died on impact or at the hospital.
