According to investigators, drugs and alcohol were considered to be factors in a crash involving a school bus in which personal injuries were suffered on the morning of January 5 in Wilmington.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said that Mark Anthony Thornton never applied his brakes as he collided with the back of a school bus on North College Road at Blue Clay Road shortly after 8 a.m.

Five students were aboard the bus that was on its way to Holly Shelter Middle School and Laney High School. They were fine.

Thornton received transport to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Police charged Thornton with DWI, reckless driving, and failure to reduce speed.
