Driver Killed, Two Hurt in SUV Crash on Umstead Rd in Durham, NC

Durham, NC (September 1, 2026) – A driver died, and two passengers were injured in an SUV wreck on Umstead Road near Riverdale Drive in Durham early Saturday morning, August 29. The collision was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m.

The Durham Police Department reported that the SUV was traveling east on Umstead Road toward Riverdale Drive when it left the roadway just before the intersection. Police said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a raised driveway.

The SUV became airborne before striking a tree and then a telephone pole. Emergency crews took both passengers to a nearby hospital, including one with critical injuries.

The Durham Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
