Charter Buses: Low Prices and Low Safety

Involuntary manslaughter charges were brought against a Greensboro, NC bus dispatcher, Zhao Jian Chen. The charges were filed several months after a fatal bus crash took place in Virginia. Chen operated Sky Express, a discounted bus service that dispatches from NC. The bus driver himself, Kin Yiu Cheung, admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, which caused the accident that killed four people in Virginia. Cheung warned Chen that he was too tired to drive, but Chen forced him to continue the route anyway.

Negligent Bus Companies

Many new discount bus companies have become popular during the past few years. Low fares and a convenient selection of highly traveled destinations make them a top choice for budget-conscious consumers. However, the low prices seem to be conducive with low safety. According to reports from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, during its first two years in business, the Sky Express bus line has received almost 50 violations and was involved in four crashes that resulted in deaths or injuries. Negligent bus companies change their names to avoid a tainted reputation and to avoid safety regulations. Sky Express was sent cease and desist orders after officials learned they were still trying to operate under an alias.
