Unfortunately, nursing homes are addled by aid shortages and negligent family members attempt to provide care. Many instances lead to physical, sexual and financial abuse. In fact, nursing home abuse and the neglect of adults goes unreported most of the time. Only 16% of elder abuse cases are ever reported, according to the National Elder Abuse Incident Study.

  • CNN reports that just over 90% of nursing home facilities are understaffed

  • There are over 42,000 nursing home beds in North Carolina and an estimated 37,400 residents in North Carolina's certified nursing homes (2011, Kaiser Family Foundation)
  • 89,911 nursing home residents (this includes individuals in un-skilled care), 32.6% male (2009, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid)
  • 1/3 of North Carolinians aged 80+ are nursing home residents
  • 50% of the nursing homes in North Carolina are non-profit (Skilled Nursing Facilities)
