The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was formed in 1929 whose primary mission is to reduce crime and traffic violations on the state's highways and interstates. Although their main focus is on driving safety, traffic violations, and other motor vehicle concerns, the officers are also a general peace officer who can perform all normal law enforcement officer duties. The Patrol is one of the largest divisions of the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
According to their official website, the NC State Highway Patrol arrested 23,199 people for driving while impaired, seized $10 million worth of drugs, and investigated 1,081 fatalities on across the state in 2008, while the Motor Carrier unit fined thousands of truck drivers for various violations in the same year. The patrol also specializes in car accident investigations and traffic warning citations.
In addition to stopping those who are breaking traffic laws, the NC State Highway Patrol also promotes highway safety though its Traffic Safety Information officers. These men and women travel the state making safety presentation to school and public groups in an effort to keep the citizens of North Carolina informed and aware of highway safety tips and highway safety dangers.
There are 8 different Highway Patrol offices across the state of North Carolina, and there are roughly 1,800 sworn troopers at work across the state today.
