Dangerous Dog Breed: Rottweilers

In March, the country was shocked to learn that the 4-year-old daughter of one of the stars of the reality show “Ax Men” was killed by the family’s Rottweiler. Just four years earlier, the same family had another Rottweiler removed from the home after a similar attack on one of the adults at the residence.

Unfortunately, Rottweiler attacks are not unusual in North Carolina. While many people think only of pit bulls when they think of dangerous dog breeds, Rottweilers have a history of aggression toward both humans and other dogs and are responsible for a significant number of fatal dog attacks in recent years. In fact, the Center for Disease Control found that the Rottweiler is the second most dangerous breed of dog next to the pit bull when it came to fatal attacks on humans.

Rottweilers originated in Germany, where the dogs were bred to herd livestock and pull carts. Today, they are more often used as police guards, as guard dogs, and as search and rescue dogs. Though the dogs are exceptionally smart, obedient, and hardworking, even those who love the breed most warn that because of the dog’s size, power, and need to protect, all Rottweilers should be thoroughly trained and closely cared for to prevent dog bites and dog attacks.
