Woman Pleads Guilty In SC Crash That Killed NC Couple
A woman has pleaded guilty to the charges against her stemming from a crash in South Carolina that resulted in a couple from North Carolina suffering fatal personal injuries earlier this year.
According to a report in The Herald of Rock Hill, 29-year-old Maria Garcia-Sanchez pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless homicide in York on September 3. She was sentenced to eight years in prison.
On May 6, 58-year-old Daniel McKenzie and his wife, 65-year-old Maureen McKenzie, both from Charlotte, died in a crash.
According to Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin, Garcia-Sanchez’s vehicle went across four lanes of traffic and a paved median on S.C. 161 and collided head-on with the pickup truck the McKenzies were traveling in.
Prosecutor Willy Thompson said that Garcia-Sanchez admitted to being an illegal immigrant and is to face deportation upon the completion of her prison sentence.
