The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported on September 21 that a woman from Fayetteville who suffered personal injuries in an accident on Butler Nursery road has died of those injuries.
Trooper Nekime Oxendine said that 18-year-old Katie Marie Jackson was pronounced dead on September 20 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Jackson and her fiancé, 19-year-old Anthony Thomas Davis, were passengers in a Ford Taurus driven by 21-year-old Christopher Anthony Forbes, Oxendine said.
Oxendine said that Forbes had initially been charged with DWI, but the charge has been upgraded to involuntary vehicular manslaughter.
Oxendine said that Davis said that they had been traveling down the road, heading west, at around 3 a.m. when Forbes told him they were traveling at 110 mph.
Oxendine said that the car then ran off the road to the right, hit a ditch, and overturned multiple times before coming to rest against a utility pole.
All three occupants were wearing seatbelts, but Jackson, seated in the back seat, was partially ejected.
Davis and Forbes sustained minor injuries in the crash.
