On October 22, a Campbell University student suffered fatal personal injuries after her vehicle ran off N.C. 27 near N.C. 87 and collided with a tree, according to an October 27 statement from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
According to 1st Sgt. T.I. Baldwin, 18-year-old Norwood resident Traci Lyn Caporale was returning to Buies Creek around 1:15 p.m. after meeting her parents, who had come from Stanly County, when the accident occurred.
Baldwin said she had just left from seeing her parents 20 minutes prior to the accident.
According to Baldwin, Caporale’s mother called her daughter’s cell phone as troopers were at the scene of the crash.
Baldwin said Caporale, who was a freshman at Campbell, was eastbound about half a mile east of N.C. 87 when the 2000 Pontiac she was driving ran off the road.
Caporale steered her vehicle, which was traveling at an estimated rate of 65 mph in a 55 mph zone, back onto the road, but it ran off to the left and struck a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Baldwin.
