Wilkes County Accident Leaves Firefighter Dead, Several Others Injured
An automobile accident in Wilkes County has left a firefighter dead and several others with personal injuries.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported that 19-year-old Alan Matheson, a volunteer firefighter at the McGrady Volunteer Fire Department, died when the SUV he was traveling in ran off the road and crashed near Mountain Valley Church Road. He and his friends were returning from a trip to the bowling alley.
The SUV’s driver, Adam Burke, overcorrected and slid into the path of an SUV heading in the opposite direction carrying a family of four. The family is expected to be fine.
Burke was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he has been listed in good condition.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol says that Burke was traveling below the posted speed limit and alcohol was not a factor.
