represent yourself legallyNot all personal injury cases require an attorney. Raleigh injury attorney Brent Adams sometimes encourages accident victims to pursue their claim without the counsel of lawyer. Why turn away a possible client?

Some cases are simply more economical for the victim to manage themselves. The details of each case are unique. Sometimes there is the possibility of liens on a personal injury settlement or subrogation claims, and a lawyer can help minimize or remove these issues. Other times it is just not economical to expend an attorney's time, staff, and resources. Lawyers may opt not to handle. For these reasons, accident victims may settle their case directly with the insurance adjuster. This requires negotiation skills, knowledge of insurance law, and clear interpretation of insurance policy language.

Sometimes individuals decide not to use an attorney for their accident case because they want to retain the full settlement or award for themselves. Typically attorneys charge one-third the settlement as their fee. However, over the years studies have been made that compare the settlements in injury cases where victims represent themselves to cases where victims retain an injury lawyer. "Insurance companies have studied that time and time again, that people on average, get much larger settlements when they have a lawyer, even when you account for attorney's fees," Raleigh injury attorney Brent Adams explains.
