Warrenton Man Dies In Fiery High-Speed Crash

On the evening of March 24, a man from Warrenton suffered fatal personal injuries when his car slammed into a tree near Norlina before catching fire, said authorities.

According to Sgt. David Henderson of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 23-year-old Cary Alonzo Greene was driving south on U.S. Highway 1 near the Weldon Road intersection just before 6:30 p.m. when his car crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road. He then overcorrected and his car ran off the right side of the road, struck several mailboxes, and collided with a tree.

Henderson said the impact with the tree caused the vehicle to split in two and catch fire. Greene died at the scene.

Henderson said that Greene was traveling at an estimated rate of speed of more than 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. He said that it is not known if alcohol was a factor.
