On March 30, an Ohio high school student suffered fatal personal injuries when his family's vehicle was struck by an unlicensed driver in North Carolina.
Sixteen-year-old Traven Keigley was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Interstate 40, near the Interstate 85 split in Hillsborough. The crash took place shortly after noon.
Keigley's mother, 49-year-old Julie Keigley, and his brother, 17-year-old Tyler Keigley, received transport to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. They were released after treatment.
The family was on a spring break trip at the time.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol's report, four people from the 2007 Nissan the family was traveling in received hospital transport.
The NCHP said that the family was northbound on I-40 when their vehicle was struck by another northbound vehicle that had lost control. Their car then hit another vehicle and went over a guardrail and down an embankment.
The driver of the other vehicle, Charlotte resident Jose Santos Tobias, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving without a license.
