A Wilkes County teenager has suffered fatal personal injuries in an accident involving a moped.
According to Wilkes County Highway Patrol troopers, 18-year-old Dakota Lee Hendrex was northbound on Highway 421 at about 9 p.m. on September 14 when he was struck from behind by another vehicle, ejecting him.
Hendrex received transport to Wilkes Regional Medical Center and was airlifted from there to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, troopers said.
The car’s driver was identified as 19-year-old Thomas Allen Nevens. Troopers say a passenger in Nevens’ vehicle received hospital transport for minor injuries.
Troopers say Nevens was traveling at an approximate speed of 65 mph in a 55 mph. He was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
The accident was the second fatal moped crash on Highway 421 involving a Wilkes County teenager within a week. Another teen died in a crash on September 10. Police are still searching for the driver of the car that caused that accident.
