Two Adults, Three Children Dead In Wreck In Croatan National Forest
Two adults and three children suffered fatal personal injuries in a wreck in which a sports utility vehicle ran off a road into a canal in the Croatan National Forest.
In an April 18 release, officials identified the driver as 24-year-old Maria Gonzales. Also identified as victims were 24-year-old Abdiel Solis, 6-year-old Alexander Gomez, 2-year-old Adeylis Salgonzalez, and 4-month-old Abdiel Solis Jr. Their hometowns were not immediately made available, but the SUV was registered in Havelock.
According to Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern, all five were dead on arrival on the evening of April 17.
The car landed on its roof under several feet of water. The water and mud in the canal caused a difficult effort to recover the bodies.
The two youngest children were still in their car seats.
In Croatan National Forest, there are 160,000 acres of bogs, salt water estuaries, and pine forests.
