Toddler Critically Injured In Dog Attack

An Oregon toddler spent her birthday, April 5, fighting for her life after a dog attack in Otter Rock caused her severe personal injuries.

According to Lincoln County, Oregon sheriff's deputies, the attack occurred shortly before 11 a.m. after the girl's mother's roommate left for work.

Sgt. Mark Meister of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the mother had just left the room where her child was, heard a noise, and returned to the room to find the dog with the child in its mouth.

The dog that attacked the child, Eden Baily, was a pet of the family that lives at the home. Deputies said the girl and her mother, Kari Wallace, had recently moved there.

Meister said they were uncertain if the attack was provoked or what the reason for the attack was.

Wallace and Baily escaped outside, trapping the dog inside the house.

Police said the girl sustained life-threatening injuries to her head, scalp, and neck. Her mother sustained unspecified injuries. Baily received transport to Newport Pacific hospital, then Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

The dog's owners aided Animal Control in apprehending the dog. An investigation revealed no prior incidents involving the dog, but it was euthanized at the owners' request. It will be examined for rabies.
