Spring Lake Pedestrian Killed On N.C. 87

On the night of January 1, a pedestrian suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross N.C. 87 in Spring Lake.

At approximately 9 p.m., 59-year-old Anthony Barton was killed when a vehicle hit him near Marantha Circle, according to Trooper C.W. Ferrell of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Ferrell said Barton’s wife said that he was crossing the street on his way to go to the store to buy cigarettes.

The vehicle’s driver was 21-year-old Sanford resident Clifton Gaster. He told the Highway Patrol that he did not see Barton. Ferrell said he was wearing dark clothing on a nonlighted highway.

Ferrell said no charges have been filed and that Gaster was not speeding or drinking.
