When you apply for SSI disability, you will need to prove that you are disabled according to Social Security Administration’s (SSA) requirements. For help, consult a Social Security disability attorney in Raleigh

Income is generally considered to be those things that help provide shelter, food and clothing. Here is a list of excluded income that is generally not counted when determining SSI disability income limits:

  • food stamps;
  • medical care;
  • assistance (housing, energy);
  • unearned income equal to $20 per month;
  • earned monthly income of $65 and ½ of earned income over $65;
  • expenses reimbursed by social services agency (such as foster care);
  • special impairment-related expenses (IRWE);
  • first $30 of quarterly earned income not received on a consistent basis; and
  • first $60 of quarterly unearned income not received on a consistent basis.

Most of the time this means anything you receive which doesn’t contribute toward your housing, food and clothing expenses. Determining eligibility for SSI disability benefits in North Carolina can be confusing. This is where the help of an attorney may be to your benefit.
