S.C. Woman Dies In Head-On Collision With Tractor Trailer On N.C. 71

On July 13, a woman from South Carolina died of the personal injuries she suffered in a head-on collision between her car and a tractor trailer on N.C. 71 near Maxton, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

A report filed by Trooper J.P. Locklear said that the accident took place at approximately 4:18 p.m., about four miles north of Maxton.

According to the report, 40-year-old Bennettsville, S.C. resident Angela Marie McKenzie was northbound in a 2002 Saturn when her car hydroplaned on the wet road, crossed the center line, and collided with a tractor trailed owned by U.S Food Service.

The report says that at the time of impact, the Saturn was traveling at about 40 mph and the truck was moving at about 30 mph.

McKenzie and a passenger in her vehicle, Bennettsville resident Willie J. Bethea Jr., received transport to Scotland Memorial Hospital. McKenzie was later pronounced dead there. Bethea’s condition was not immediately made available.

The report said 57-year-old Shannon resident Larry Alton Cummings, the driver of the tractor trailer, was uninjured in the crash.
