Police in Morehead City said that the driver of a pickup truck suffered fatal personal injuries when a rear-end collision caused his vehicle to plunge from the high-rise U.S. Highway 70 bridge over the Intercoastal Waterway.
According to authorities, the accident took place around 5:30 a.m. on April 3 when another vehicle slammed into the truck from behind. The impact caused it to go over the guardrail.
The bridge was shut down by police in order for divers to search for the truck, which was located along with a body after a few hours. The victim's identity was not immediately made available.
According to authorities, the driver of the other vehicle received transport to the hospital.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
