On the night of September 11, a woman from Winston-Salem who danced with the Carolina Ballet died of the personal injuries she suffered in a crash caused by an alleged drunken driver at Lead Mine and Strickland roads in Raleigh.
According to authorities, 20-year-old Elena Bright Shapiro was traveling on Strickland Road in a Hyundai at approximately 8:30 p.m. by a Mercedes driven by 40 year-old Dr. Raymond Dwight Cook of Raleigh. Authorities say Cook, who is a plastic surgeon with WakeMed, was traveling at a rate of 90 mph in a 45 mph at the time of the crash.
Authorities say Shapiro received transport to WakeMed, where she was later pronounced dead. Cook also received hospital transport for minor injuries.
Police charged Cook with death by motor vehicle, DWI, failure to reduce speed, and careless and reckless driving. He was released after he posted a $50,000 bond.
