According to Raleigh police, a 21-year-old man was intoxicated and driving at nearly three times the speed limit on April 16 when his sports utility vehicle collided with a car, causing its driver to suffer fatal personal injuries.
On April 19, police charged Timothy Lee Ford with second-degree murder in connection to the crash in which 21-year-old Raleigh resident Sika Akou Ekpe died.
Ford is also faced with two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle and one count of DWI.
According to police, Ford was traveling at an approximate rate of 90 mph on Lake Wheeler Road at about 12:30 a.m. when the 2005 Toyota he was driving struck Ekpe's 1999 Mitsubishi as she was turning left from a parking lot. Her car spun around three times and the Toyota overturned, hitting a tree.
A passenger in Ekpe's vehicle, 30-year-old Raleigh resident Cloudia Olandzo Bo, sustained serious injuries in the crash. She received transport to WakeMed.
Police said rescuers had to extricate Ford from his vehicle, but he sustained only minor injuries.
Police said a witness saw Ford speeding and straddling the center line prior to the crash.
