Raleigh Man Allegedly Fatal Struck By Drunk Driver
A Raleigh man's family says he suffered fatal personal injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while walking home from his sister's birthday party on April 9.
Police said 47-year-old Freddie Lane was fatally struck while crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Chavis Way. His body was located at about 2 a.m. the following morning.
Lane's sister, Darnic Richardson, said that he decided to walk home from her party on the night of April 9. Police said the driver of the vehicle that allegedly struck him was identified as 18-year-old Raleigh resident Raul Gutierrez-Leja.
Police said Gutierrez-Leja told them Lane was lying in the road when he arrived at the scene. However, police said there were no indications it had been another vehicle that struck Lane.
Police charged Gutierrez-Leja with DWI, driving without a license, and having an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle.
