A Raleigh driver of a Jeep hit two cars after leaving a hit-and-run he caused. Matthew Ryan Burkle was found to be driving while intoxicated. Burkle's collisions hurt a person who was hospitalized for their injuries. Three witnesses saw Burkle leave the crash scene on Spring Forest Road. He was charged with felony hit-and-run and driving while impaired and was held in the Wake County jail on a $13,000 bond.
Hit-and-Run Laws in North Carolina
All vehicle owners should purchase uninsured motorist coverage to ensure compensation for themselves and all occupants of their vehicle. This uninsured motorist coverage will provide payment for injuries and medical bills due to an unidentified hit-and-run driver.
Leaving the scene of an accident without identifying oneself is a criminal act. Hit-and-run accident laws in NC have serious consequences ranging from eight months to a year in jail, hefty fines, high bail bonds, loss of driving privileges and probation. There are more impacts on NC hit-and-run drivers now than ever before. Sadly, hit-and-run accidents still happen and victims may suffer life-changing long-term injuries, lost wages and experience pain and suffering, all of which are compensatory items.
