Drivers face distractions on North Carolina roads. Other cars, tractor trailers, motorcycles or animals crossing the street add to the risk of an accident. Distractions are present inside every car too.
Passengers, children, cell phones (and those breaking hands-free laws), applying makeup, eating and loud music are interior distractions that can impair a driver's judgment and reaction time. Switching CDs or playing with radio controls also takes the driver's attention away from the road.
Pedestrian Killed in NC Car Accident
Recently a Raleigh driver hit and killed a pedestrian with her car because she was distracted by her radio. Raleigh resident Princess Nicole Singletary was charged with misdemeanor death and failure to maintain a lane of travel. Santos Cruz-Domingue, 61, also of Raleigh, was walking down the sidewalk when Singletary collided with him. Singletary first hit a utility pole before impact with Cruz-Domingue. He later passed away at WakeMed, according to the latest reports from WRAL.
Drivers' Common Distractions
Car radio distractions cause accidents around the country. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted drivers caused 20% of injury crashes in 2009, killing almost 5,500 people. When a driver changes a radio station or adjusts the volume (or even makes changes to climate controls), they're taking their hand off the wheel. Driving is a skill where focus, attention and coordination are absolutely necessary.
NC Lawyers Experienced With Car Accidents
Car accident attorneys in Raleigh work with victims of car crashes and families who have wrongfully lost a loved one in a car accident because of someone else's negligent driving. Sadly, car crashes caused by a distracted driver were preventable-if the driver paid more attention and followed laws, every year there wouldn't be thousands of people dying or living with life-long injuries.
