An inmate from Cook County Jail in Illinois is filing suit against Cook County alleging negligence after he sustained personal injuries when the ceiling of his jail cell collapsed.

On May 23, a suit was filed by Robert Kennedy against Cook County and Thomas Dar, Cook County Sheriff alleging that jail officials should have been aware of the unsafe condition of cell’s ceiling.

According to the suit, Kennedy was sleeping in his cell on May 13 when a large piece of the ceiling collapsed, falling on top of him.

According to the suit, the defendants knew or should have known about the ceiling’s condition. Kennedy alleges negligence by jail officials for their failure to ensure the cell was in safe condition and proper repair in addition to failure to inspect and repair the cell’s ceiling, according to the suit.

The suit claims that as a result of the ceiling collapse, Kennedy sustained personal and permanent injuries. He seeks damages in excess of $50,000.
