Police Officer Requires Surgery For Infection From Pit Bull Bite

A Portland, Oregon police officer who suffered personal injuries when he was bitten by a pit bull during an investigation in early April had to undergo a surgical procedure to remove a portion of his thigh after the bite wound became seriously infected, according to a spokesperson from the Police Bureau.

On April 12, Officer Stephen Gandy was bitten by the dog during a drug investigation in Southeast Portland. As Gandy was approaching fleeing suspects, police say a pit bull ran out of a nearby home and bit him.

Police said that Gandy's bite was a little swollen at the time, but he was expected to recover.

After the surgery, Gandy was listed in serious condition.
