Pickup Truck Collision Claims Life of Clayton High Graduate

A collision involving two pickup trucks in Archer Lodge killed a Clayton High School graduate, near her parents' home on Saturday.

Shannon N. Adkins of Clayton, was driving a truck north on Buffalo, when the driver of a truck going south crossed the center line and struck her.

Adkins truck overturned and rolled onto the shoulder of the road. Ms. Adkins, who was wearing her seatbelt, died at the scene.

Desiree Olsen, driver of the other vehicle, is listed in fair condition at Wake Med.

Alcohol was a factor, according to troopers. Olsen was charged with driving while impaired.

Ernie Adkins, Shannon Adkins' mother, was up waiting for her daughter to get home. She heard the terrible crash, that claimed her daughter's life.

She and her husband walked out to the crash scene and learned of their daughter's death from troopers.

Adkins graduated from Clayton High School and was pursuing a career in criminal justice.
